Chapter Nine
There was a knock at the pool house door. âGabe! Iâm surprised itâs you,â Sammy said.
âYou knew I was comingâyou had me bring you this.â He held up a package wrapped in pink tissue paper and tied with a satin ribbon. That would be the handmade lace shawl Sammy had bought for Pam. Heâd thought and thought before heâd figured out the perfect gift. Heâd wanted something special and unique, like her. Heâd run through all the handmade things available in BeaufordâNoelâs quilts, Heathâs stained glass, Neylandâs jewelry, and on and on. None of it seemed right until he thought of Helene-Louiseâs lace. She had helped him decide on the shawl.
âWhy are you surprised?â
Sammy took the package and stood aside for Gabe to come in. âIâm surprised because you have never knocked on a door in your life. You barge right in like itâs your due to be wherever you want to be.â
âYeah, well.â Gabe went to be mini fridge and got a beer. âConsidering the nature of that gift, I was afraid of who you might have in here. Didnât want to interrupt anything.â
There had been plenty to interrupt, just not exactly what Gabe was thinking. But it was coming. He had to believe that. That girl was driving him insane. And heâd gotten this crazy idea in his head that he had to have her in that barn. Heâd even made some preparations.
âYou want a beer?â Gabe asked.
âYou mean do I want one of my beers? No. I have to drive to the airport to get your friends. Remember?â
Gabe headed to the sofa, but Sammy headed him off. âSit in the chair. Itâs more comfortable.â Truth was, he didnât want Gabe to sit where heâd taken Pamâs bra off this morning. It seemed wrong.
âWhy, thank you, Sammy. I donât believe you have ever been concerned about my comfort before. Do you have anything to eat?â
âNo.â Sammy laid the package on the table and settled on the couch. He knew Gabe would want food because he always wanted food, but he also knew there was plenty to eat just a few steps away in Missyâs kitchen. âWhen did you get here?â
âThis morning. Hours ago. I was going to come out to the concert site to see you, but I fell asleep.â
âSo youâre staying with Missy?â
He nodded. âAll week. Plus four of my teammatesâpresent and former. At least the food will be good.â
âDo you think of anything except food?â
âOf course I do. Beer. Dr. Pepper. Football. My wife.â His voice went soft, though Sammy doubted Gabe knew it. âHow are things going here?â
âFrom what I hear, the football camp is all set.â
âI wouldnât expect any less. Nathan Scottâs a good man.â
âThe stage is nearly ready. Everything with the concert is on track, too.â
âI wouldnât expect any less. Youâre a good man.â
âJust doing my job. Thanks for picking that up for me.â Sammy gestured to the pink package on the table.
âYouâd better unwrap it to make sure I got the right one.
