Chapter Nine

There was a knock at the pool house door. “Gabe! I’m surprised it’s you,” Sammy said.

“You knew I was coming—you had me bring you this.” He held up a package wrapped in pink tissue paper and tied with a satin ribbon. That would be the handmade lace shawl Sammy had bought for Pam. He’d thought and thought before he’d figured out the perfect gift. He’d wanted something special and unique, like her. He’d run through all the handmade things available in Beauford—Noel’s quilts, Heath’s stained glass, Neyland’s jewelry, and on and on. None of it seemed right until he thought of Helene-Louise’s lace. She had helped him decide on the shawl.

“Why are you surprised?”

Sammy took the package and stood aside for Gabe to come in. “I’m surprised because you have never knocked on a door in your life. You barge right in like it’s your due to be wherever you want to be.”

“Yeah, well.” Gabe went to be mini fridge and got a beer. “Considering the nature of that gift, I was afraid of who you might have in here. Didn’t want to interrupt anything.”

There had been plenty to interrupt, just not exactly what Gabe was thinking. But it was coming. He had to believe that. That girl was driving him insane. And he’d gotten this crazy idea in his head that he had to have her in that barn. He’d even made some preparations.

“You want a beer?” Gabe asked.

“You mean do I want one of my beers? No. I have to drive to the airport to get your friends. Remember?”

Gabe headed to the sofa, but Sammy headed him off. “Sit in the chair. It’s more comfortable.” Truth was, he didn’t want Gabe to sit where he’d taken Pam’s bra off this morning. It seemed wrong.

“Why, thank you, Sammy. I don’t believe you have ever been concerned about my comfort before. Do you have anything to eat?”

“No.” Sammy laid the package on the table and settled on the couch. He knew Gabe would want food because he always wanted food, but he also knew there was plenty to eat just a few steps away in Missy’s kitchen. “When did you get here?”

“This morning. Hours ago. I was going to come out to the concert site to see you, but I fell asleep.”

“So you’re staying with Missy?”

He nodded. “All week. Plus four of my teammates—present and former. At least the food will be good.”

“Do you think of anything except food?”

“Of course I do. Beer. Dr. Pepper. Football. My wife.” His voice went soft, though Sammy doubted Gabe knew it. “How are things going here?”

“From what I hear, the football camp is all set.”

“I wouldn’t expect any less. Nathan Scott’s a good man.”

“The stage is nearly ready. Everything with the concert is on track, too.”

“I wouldn’t expect any less. You’re a good man.”

“Just doing my job. Thanks for picking that up for me.” Sammy gestured to the pink package on the table.

“You’d better unwrap it to make sure I got the right one.
